I frowned, remembering that text message I got the morning we rescued Embry from Roy. I’d never read it. “What are you getting at?”

“You knew Bryce would be there last night, didn’t you? That’s why you agreed to go.”

Just as I was about to refute his theory, another text message popped up.

Had fun ;) I rlly missed you - Bryce

He couldn’t even spell out his enthusiasm for shits sake! Would it hurt him to spell out the entire word?

Ren read the message—or what was left of it—repeatedly, his eyes moving like rapid fire over the lines. He stared at me like I ripped his heart out with my bare hands and stomped it into the mud. The pain in his eyes was so real, it left me breathless.

“It’s not what it looks like.” I said goodbye! Couldn’t Ren see that? Was it not glaringly obvious in my eyes that I was done with Bryce?

“Then tell me what it looks like, because to me it looks like you’re fucking your ex behind my back!” His shout echoed across the ranch.

It could probably be heard for miles. Miles and miles of unhappiness stretched thin and raw.

I flinched but I didn’t back down from him. “First of all, we’re not even together. If I wanted to fuck my ex, I would. Second of all, I don’t have to listen to you, Ren Slater. Third of all, nothing happened. We went to lunch, we talked, and then he took me home. I don’t want him. I want you. Isn’t that all the proof you need? If you don’t believe me, then what are we doing? If you think I’d do that to you, why are we even doing this?”

The longer I talked, the angrier he got. His eyes were dark, unfeeling holes, and there was no finding myself in them today.

“You went to lunch with him and talked,” he repeated, as if he needed to hear it from his own ears. “Are you fucking kidding me? What did you two talk about? The stock market?”

“The Dow is down…” I offhandedly agreed, cringing when he didn’t immediately burst out in uncontrollable laughter and instantly get over his mood. Tough crowd…

“This isn’t a joke, Janna.” He took my phone and threw it at the ground. It bounced once and then he stepped on it with the heel of his cowboy boot, smashing the screen.

“Hey!”

“There’s so much wrong with what you just said to me I don’t know where to start.” His chest heaved up and down, he was breathing so hard. “What was last night about? What was anything we’ve done about? I love you, Janna, and you could care less. You keep messing around with Bryce fucking Morgan when you have someone who’s been in love with you since he was a kid right here! I love you, why can’t you see that?”

“Ren…”

“No. Let me finish. If you wanted to fuck your ex, you would?” he asked in acute disbelief.
